Sellotape Research

Before I go into detail about sellotape and its uses I would like to research how advertisers draw buyers and consumers in to using and buying their products.

Adverts use many techniques to draw buyers and consumers in such as, they may show a problem that only their project can solve such as the ‘bayer aspirin commercial’ from 1989.

This aspirin commercial shows multiple scenarios of people in pain and calling aspirin a ‘wonder drug’ the only drug that can solve this pain, it’s almost a hyperbole they go over the top with how this is a quote ‘wonder drug’.

Another technique that adverts use to sell their products is a heart felt type story, one that makes you feel and makes you emotional, this is well known in advertisements an example of this is:

This advert spends 2 minutes building development with the animals having fun on a trampoline, only for the girl to run out with glee looking at her new present (the trampoline) only for her dog to jump on it and starts jumping on the trampoline, and then it says ‘gifts that everyone will love’.

My advert will fall into the first category, mine solves a problem, my advert is about wrapping a present for Christmas, and the sellotape is used to keep the wrapping paper together.

What can it be used for?

Sellotape’s typical use is mending, joining and sealing, sellotape is not as strong as other tapes, such as ‘gorilla tape’ and ‘duct tape’ but even though it may not be as strong as these it does have its advantages, such as, sellotape is transparent so it isn’t as noticeable as duct tape and gorilla tape, and the price is a lot cheaper.

Sellotape has multiple types and sizes, such as, ‘ brown parcel tape ‘ and ‘double sided tape’ and can come in packs of 8, and can be small, medium or large in size.

Idea 1 – April fools day advert, this advert is comedy based, a advert showing someone walking into a open door way, but the doorway is covered with clear sellotape that traps them and gets them stuck.

Idea 2 – Serious, this advert would be serious, it could show someone breaking something and fixing it with sello tape.

Idea 3 – because christmas is coming up I could make an advert about how you can use sellotape to wrap your presents with wrapping paper.

The idea I have chosen to do is the 3rd idea because with christmas coming up I feel like it would gain more popularity, and it would show the usefulness of sellotape.

This sellotape advert is very similar to the advertisement I want to do.

But I only want someone taping a box/gift and applying sellotape to the corners.

finished story board

The things i’ll need to get are as follows.

equipment.

The first thing ill need is the ‘present’/ thing being wrapped and taped, any ordinary toy/ piece of equipment.

The second I need is wrapping paper, something with colour would better, a red type would most likely be best, reason being, research shows that people are drawing to higher hues/ brighter colours especially children, so to appeal to a greater audience it would be best to use a brighter type wrapping paper.

The final thing i’ll need is legitimate sellotape, it has to be legitimate because when trying to sell a product you need to show the product your presenting as much as possible (without forcing it on your audience) it needs to look natural, so I can’t use any type of ‘knockoff’ tape.

Video Editing Stage.

The software i’m planning to use is one i’m familiar with, Sony Vegas PRO 14, this software may be more limited than other software’s such as Premiere Pro, but it is one i’m familiar with and should be sufficient enough for the editing i’m doing.

The editing techniques i’ll need are as follows: quick cuts, zooming and speed ups.

These are some of the easiest techniques to do, and with a sophisticated program like Sony Vegas 14, it should be easy to do.

The video will start with the ‘present’ unwrapped, then it will cut to someone wrapping the present and focusing mainly on when the sellotape is used, the ad will end with the sellotape logo with the narrator saying some sort of catchphrase. The ‘ad’ will be around 10-20 seconds long, short ads grab the audiences attention easier and therefore it doesn’t drag.

If the video slows down on the sellotape it will show the sellotape the most and therefore the thing that is most prominent in the video is the sellotape. The present needs to be wrapped easily, if the person wrapping it struggles with the wrapping it will give the consensus that sellotape is hard to use, if the present is easily wrapped then people will be drawn in to use sellotape instead of distanced away from it.

I’ll also need some sound effects/music, i’ll need non-copyrighted christmas type music, other the ad will come off as dull and boring.

The sellotape logo will be shown at the end of the video as well as other types of sellotape that are used for different purposes.

Equipment

The equipment I need is as follows, a computer/laptop with Sony Vegas 14, my laptop is productivity based so my laptop should be more than enough, and I also have Sony Vegas 14. I’ll also need a camera, high quality if possible, my college should be able to supply me with that, the other equipment i’ll need is a present to wrap (preferably a cube or cuboid shape) and wrapping paper, and the last thing i’ll need is of course the sellotape.

My laptop’s specifications are as follows:

Intel Core i7-3520m 2.90GHz, 16gb of 1600mhz ram, 64BIT Operating System, Intel HD Graphics.

The finished project could have been better in my opinion, I did feel rushed in certain parts and if this was actually a real advert I would’ve more intelligent with my time.

I also maybe would’ve went for a more imaginative concept, with this simple advert I could not do much with the editing apart from simple editing techniques.

I’ll admit myself that this idea wasn’t as creative as it could’ve been.

I think the editing I did was successful and looked decent but considering the other challenging types of editing (especially in Vegas Pro 14) the editing I did was easy.
